When it comes to diabetic shoes most people wonder, “Do I really need to wear diabetic shoes? I like to wear shoes that are fashionable and I don’t remember diabetic shoes as being fashionable.”
As diabetes becomes more common, companies are making more fashionable choices. The days of the ugly Grandma shoes are gone. There is a fashionable diabetic shoe for you!
You may need dress shoes for your job at IBM Poughkeepsie. Some people might need sneakers or steel-toed footwear for their job at the Gap Distribution Center in Fishkill. While others who work at Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company in Dutchess County may need work boots. There is a shoe or boot for every need!
What are Diabetic Shoes?
Diabetic shoes (extra depth shoes, therapeutic shoes) are specially designed shoes and inserts that decrease the risk of skin breakdown and other foot problems often seen in diabetics.
Who Can Get Diabetic Shoes?
Medicare and most insurance companies cover shoes for those who have diabetes and at least one of the following:
-
-
- Calluses of either foot that could lead to ulcers
- Nerve damage in your feet with signs of calluses of either foot
- Foot deformity (bunion, hammer toe, etc.)
- Poor circulation of either foot
- Partial or complete foot amputation
You will also need a letter from the doctor treating your diabetes stating that you meet the criteria for diabetic shoes, and exactly why you need them.
Remember, you can get one pair of diabetic shoes with inserts each year.
How Do I Get a Pair of Diabetic Shoes?
During your appointment with Dr. Schlam at Hollowbrook Foot Specialists, we will look at any risks you may have that could make you eligible for diabetic shoes. If you are a good candidate, we will do a comprehensive exam to determine if you qualify for diabetic shoes. Once it is determined that you will benefit from diabetic shoes we will need a letter from the doctor treating your diabetes stating that you meet the criteria for diabetic shoes, and exactly why you need them.
When your shoes arrive we will schedule you an appointment to make sure that they fit properly and are comfortable.
If you already have diabetic shoes already, don’t forget that you can get a new pair each year! Make sure to tell us you need new shoes when scheduling your appointment.
