Super Bowl XLVIII:  Are you ready for some football?

Unfortunately, it seems as if the public is NOT ready for football.  Recent news reports stated that ticket sales for Super Bowl XLVIII between the Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks game are down, so much so that prices have dropped by approximately $1,200.  Although the frigid winter weather in New York and New Jersey is keeping people from wanting to attend the outdoor game at MetLife Stadium, there are ways to overcome the cold temperatures and stay safe while avoiding frostbite.

Super Bowl XLVIII:  How do I keep my feet warm in the winter?

When planning to be outside for several hours at a time, it is very important to take care of your feet in order to avoid frostbite.  There are several steps you can take to ensure that your feet stay warm and dry including:

  • Layer your socks:  The first pair you put on should be labeled as moisture wicking socks.  Follow that with 1 – 2 pairs of nylon or nylon-wool blend socks.  DO NOT WEAR COTTON SOCKS.
  • Borrow a tip from the Tour de France riders:  Take a paper towel and fold it over your toes as extra insulation.
  • Place hand/toe warmers either under or on top of your toes:  They are self-activating, and generally last for 5 – 8 hours.
  • Save your bread and grocery bags:  Once you have done all of the steps above, put the bag over your feet before putting your shoes on to keep your feet dry.
  • Wear less breathable shoes:  Do not wear shoes with mesh uppers.  You want to wear hiking shoes or winter boots that are full leather but still flexible.

Super Bowl XLVIII:  What is frostbite?

Frostbite is defined as an injury to body tissues caused by exposure to extreme cold, typically affecting the nose, fingers, or toes.  When you mix cold temperatures with wind chill, frostbite can set in quickly, even on clothed skin.

Super Bowl XLVIII: Keep your Feet Warm for the Big Game and Prevent Frostbite

Super Bowl XLVIII:  How will I know if I have frostbite?

Signs of early frostbite include pain, the feeling of pin and needles, throbbing, aching, and numbness.  The longer you are out in the cold temperatures, the more severe the frostbite can be.  If you have any of the following symptoms, it is important to get to seek medical care immediately.  These include your skin turning red, blistering, swelling, or becoming blotchy or discolored.
