I have Diabetes. Do I need Diabetic Shoes?
Not all diabetics need diabetic shoes, but many do.
About 60-70% of all diabetics will develop a condition known as peripheral neuropathy, which is a loss of sensation most often found in the feet. About half of diabetics with peripheral neuropathy don’t even realize they have it.
People with peripheral neuropathy are more susceptible to problems and should wear diabetic shoes.
After being diagnosed with neuropathy, the most common foot problem is getting a diabetic foot ulcer. Diabetics are less likely to heal than non-diabetics, and some of these wounds can take years to fully resolve.
Other diabetics with circulation problems, or deformities such as bunions or hammertoes should also wear diabetic shoes.
