While women are out shopping this Black Friday at the Poughkeepsie Galleria, it is guaranteed that even though stilettos are not on the shopping list, they will end up in the shopping bag. With the holiday parties fast approaching women are sure to bring out those stilettos and with them can come pain on the back of their heels. Women are so well known for loving their shoes that there is actually a foot problem named after this! The “pump bump” is a boney enlargement at the back of the heel which can cause heel pain, and you can develop blisters from the bump rubbing against your shoes.
In medical terms, the “pump bump” is called a Haglund’s Deformity. Wearing pumps, having high arches, walking on the outsides of your feet, or wearing stiff, rigid backed shoes can all lead to the formation of this painful bony prominence. This bump isn’t something that you should overlook because it can get bigger, leading to more problems like having your heel rub more in your shoes, and causing serious pain and blisters.
To relieve some of the pain, you can apply ice to the area after removing your shoes. It is a good idea to switch shoes and wear something more comfortable that doesn’t rub as much at the heel. Roomy tennis shoes can be a good option for most people.
When you come in to our office in Wappingers Falls, we will do a careful examination and review your past medical history. We may need to order x-rays or another type of test to determine the structure of your feet. Your treatment will be personalized just for you, and may include:
- Inserts or orthotics for your shoes
- A cast or walking boot
- A topical medication applied directly to the heel
- An oral medication to keep swelling down
These conservative treatments will generally be tried first, but if they don’t work or there are other concerns, surgery may be needed. Despite the treatment method, Hollowbrook Foot Specialists wants to make sure you get the relief you need. Schedule your appointment with us today.
