Rigid: A rigid hammertoe can be seen in chronic conditions such as arthritis or in people who have waited too long to get treatment for a flexible hammertoe. This type is more serious, and the treatment is more complicated.

- Decreased or painful motion at the joint that is contracted
- Pain in the ball of your foot at the base of the contracted toe
- Redness and swelling around the affected joint
- The formation of corns or calluses at the top of the joint
- Pain with pressure from footgear
