If you have flat feet, you can have a wide range of symptoms, and can be affected to different degrees. No matter the cause, people with flatfoot have some degree of loss of the arch of the foot. There are many types of flatfoot, but one of the most common types is called flexible flatfoot.
Do I have flexible flat feet?
Those with flexible flat feet have a slowly progressive flattening of their feet. This usually starts in childhood or early adolescence, and continues into the adult years. Both feet are generally affected equally with eventual stretching or tearing of ligaments and tendons causing inflammation and pain.
A flexible flatfoot means that although you have flat feet while standing, you still have an arch when you are sitting.
What symptoms are seen with flexible flat feet?
You may notice:
- Turned in ankles
- Pain in ankles, heels, or arches
- Pain on the outside of the feet
- Weakness of the feet or legs
- Fatigue in the feet or legs
- Shin splint pain
