Let’s face it – hitting the gym is the most common New Year’s Resolution and there are so many different types of gyms to pick in Dutchess County and the surrounding Hudson Valley areas – it is also the one that’s usually given up after a month. But let’s make this year different, and improve your foot health as well as your over all well-being.
One major reason everyone decides to go back to the gym is because of weight gain (especially after our long indulgences during the holidays). But those few pesky pounds (or more) can compromise your health – especially in your lower extremities including having a major impact on your feet.
Here are a few helpful hints to getting started on your workout regimen:
- Always consult your physician first and get a physical as well as a foot exam (especially if you haven’t been to the gym in a long time)
- Start slow! Don’t rush or overdo it on your first few weeks to the gym. Begin with a low impact exercise, such as walking (brisk walk can burn upwards of 100 calories an hour)
- When you begin your workout with stretching – make sure you stretch your feet too!
- Always wear comfortable, supportive sneakers that fit properly, never workout in sandals, boots, or other non-athletic shoes.
Most importantly – Listen to your feet! If your feet are hurting or you are having trouble exercising due to foot pain call local podiatrist Dr. Yavor Geshev, from Hollowbrook Foot Specialist for an appointment to get you back on your feet and at the gym!
Foot injuries from the gym are common and treatable. Don’t walk around in pain. A few common ailments that can occur when exercising are:
- Athlete’s foot
- Blisters
- Corns and calluses
- Heel pain (including heel spurs)
- Stress fractures
