Rory McIlroy Injury

If you are a golf fan, you might have heard that Rory McIlroy, the number 1 golfer in the world, just had a total rupture of his left ankle ligament. The big question now is, when will he be able to get back onto the course and play golf again?

Even more important, will Rory McIlroy play in the British Open July 12-19, 2015?

And the short answer is, Rory shouldn’t be playing golf for a very long time, and especially not in the British Open this month.

The Rory McIlroy Injury Explained:

Rory McIlroy Injury

While playing soccer, Rory McIlroy twisted his left ankle and had a complete tear of the anterior talo-fibular ligament (ATFL) – the ligament on the outer front part of his ankle.

When you have a complete tear of an ankle ligament, the ankle bones can move too far out of place. It also hurts like the Dickens. Your ankle swells up and you limp around for a good, long time.

How long will the Rory McIlroy Injury take to heal?

Ligament tears take the same amount of time as bones to heal – 4 to 6 weeks, sometimes longer. After the ligament is healed, Rory will need extensive physical therapy to regain his strength and mobility.

Does the Rory McIlroy Ankle Injury mean he needs surgery?

Most likely, yes.

If you or I had a complete tear of the ATFL of the ankle, chances are we would not have surgery.

But the Rory McIlroy Ankle Sprain would be best off treated surgically.

The reason is that Rory McIlroy is a world-class athlete – the number 1 golfer in the world. Any slight imperfection in his stance could knock him out of contention forever.

Once the swelling goes down, Rory should be seriously considering getting this fixed.

Does that mean Rory McIlroy could be out for the season?

Here is what I would recommend with the facts that I have now.  Consider having a surgery to repair the tendon and take the time to heal for this season. If he doesn’t let it heal properly he might be ruining the rest of his career! He should let his ankle heal properly – at least 4 to 6 weeks – and then get some physical therapy after that.

Your job may not be as important as being the world’s #1 golfer but it is important to have an sprained ankle taken care of properly.
