What’s happening
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed cutting Medicare payments for many visits where your podiatrist provides an evaluation or checkup and a procedure — like nail care, wound care, or an injection — on the same day. Right now, Medicare pays separately for both parts of that visit. Under the proposal, Medicare would cut payment for the other part by half.
Why this matters to you
This isn’t a change to your out-of-pocket costs directly — but it could affect your access to care. When Medicare cuts what it pays for the same visit and services you already receive, practices can be forced to see more patients per day to stay open, ask you to come back for a separate visit for care that used to happen in one appointment, or in some cases limit how many Medicare patients they’re able to see.
The public comment period on this proposal closes September 14, 2026.
