Painful lump on top of your foot? Possibly a Ganglion Cyst
If you’ve ever had a soft squishy lump develop on top of your foot or ankle, then you may have developed what’s called a ganglion cyst. A ganglion cyst is a benign sack of gelatinous fluid that’s created by your body as a cushion usually between a tendon and an irregular bone (such as a bone spur). When this cyst gets large enough, it may cause pain when wearing shoes.
What treatment options are there?
-
Conservative treatments
- Pain creams
- wearing shoe gear that doesn’t put pressure on the ganglion cyst
-
Surgical treatments
- Fine needle aspiration under local anesthesia
- Incision & Drainage under local anesthesia
- Surgical removal in the operating room with bone spur excision (if applicable)
